Craftsman applying a smooth skim coat to a wall

Level 5 Smooth Finish

A full skim coat over the entire surface. The finish for gloss paint, big windows, and unforgiving light.

A Level 5 finish adds a thin skim coat across the whole surface so there is no difference in porosity or texture between the board and the joints. It is what you want on walls that get raking light from tall windows, on ceilings under can lights, and anywhere you're using a sheen above flat.

How we approach it

  1. 1

    Level 4 first

A Level 5 is only as good as the Level 4 underneath it. We don't skip ahead.

  2. 2

    Skim the surface

Thin uniform coat applied across every square inch of wall or ceiling.

  3. 3

    Sand under raking light

We light the wall the way it will be lit in real life and sand to that standard.

  4. 4

    Prime-ready handoff

Surface handed to your painter clean and dust-free.

This is probably you if…

  • You have a two-story wall of windows
  • Your designer specified a satin or gloss wall
  • You've been burned by visible seams before
